Even Nutritional Therapists Need a Reset

Why a Yearly Health MOT Might Be the Best Gift You Can Give Yourself

You know your body. You eat well, stay active, and try to do “all the right things.” You’re the one people come to for answers. But lately? You’re tired. Not falling-into-bed tired, wired-but-exhausted tired. The kind that lingers, even after a good night’s sleep. The kind that makes you question if this is just how life is now.

I get it. Because even as a nutritional therapist, someone trained to spot the signs and make sense of them, I found myself in that exact place.

A Subtle Feeling Something Was “Off”

After two back-to-back viruses in February, I couldn’t quite bounce back. I wasn’t ill enough to see the GP, but I didn’t feel like myself either. My energy was unpredictable, my mood off-kilter, and something just felt… off.

So, I decided to take myself through the very process I guide my clients through, a yearly health MOT. It’s something I recommend to all women who are juggling the mental, emotional, and physical loads of daily life. The kind of check-in that goes deeper than symptoms and looks at what’s really going on under the surface.

I Became My Own Client

I ran a full blood panel (thankfully I know someone happy to take my blood!), and I walked myself through my signature Five Pillars approach, just like I do with every client who comes through my clinic.

  • Nutrition – I logged four full days of food, weighing everything so I could properly assess my macro intake and hydration levels.
  • Movement – I took an honest look at how I was moving (and how much of it was actually supporting me).
  • Sleep – I reviewed my rest, not just how long I was sleeping, but how restorative it felt.
  • Stress – I reflected on the last 18 months… and realised just how much I’d been holding and how much it had taken its toll
  • Mindset – I asked myself: What would I say to a client feeling the way I do right now?

With a family history of type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism and a genetic predisposition for low B12 and folate levels, I knew which markers I wanted to keep a close eye on.

The Results Surprised Me

Thyroid? Fine. Blood sugar? Stable. B12 and folate? Right where they should be.

But then came the surprise:
❗ My lipid markers were higher than I expected.
❗ My kidney function was a little lower than I was comfortable with.

I’ll be honest, I felt a pang of embarrassment. I could have seen this coming. I thought I was managing everything well. But the blood work told me otherwise.

And that’s the point, really. We can’t always feel when something’s out of balance. But our bodies are always whispering. The question is, are we listening?

What I Did Next

After the initial shock, I did what I encouraged my clients to do: I took a breath, sought support, and made a plan.

I reached out to my brilliant supervisor, Debbie Grayson. I reflected on the stress I’d been under, the illnesses I’d pushed through, and the habits that had quietly slipped. My body wasn’t failing me, it was trying to protect me. But it needed more from me than I’d been giving.

So, I made some key changes:

🔹 Movement: I swapped high-intensity sessions for restorative movement, walking, stretching, and gentle, nervous-system-soothing practices.
🔹 Nutrition: My fibre intake had dipped, and fats had crept up without me noticing. I'm increasing my leafy greens intake and focusing on building more plant diversity on my plate.
🔹 Supplements: I introduced a few targeted supports to calm my body and reduce the histamine response I’d noticed increasing.
🔹 Collaboration: I shared my results with my GP, because working in partnership with your wider healthcare team is always the best path forward.

Why This Matters for You

If you’re reading this and thinking, “That sounds like me,” you’re not alone.

So many of the women I work with are intelligent, proactive, and capable. You know your body. You want to feel better. But despite your best efforts, something still feels off.

  • You’ve tried cutting sugar, adding protein, and sleeping more.

  • You’ve bought the supplements, taken the baths, and done the pilates.

  • And still, your energy isn’t where it should be. Your mood dips. Your gut’s unpredictable. You feel like you’re living on adrenaline and coffee.

This is exactly where a Wellbeing Kickstart can change everything.
