It’s January, and many of us started the year with big ambitions to transform our health and energy levels. Eat better. Move more. Sleep longer.
The goals are worthy, but the truth is that trying to do it all at once often leads to overwhelm.
If you’ve already fallen off the wagon with your New Year’s resolutions, you’re not alone. The sheer amount of advice out there and the pressure to implement it all can feel paralysing. Instead, let's turn it on its head and see lasting change isn’t about doing more, but about doing less. In this blog, I'm exploring why simplifying your wellness goals might just be the key to success.
Why Doing It All Doesn’t Work
When it comes to improving your health, the “more is better” mentality can backfire. Think about it: If you’re trying to overhaul your diet, commit to a new fitness routine, meditate daily, and improve your sleep all at once, where do you start?
The problem isn’t just logistical. Research shows that our brains have a limited capacity for decision-making and willpower. When we overload ourselves with too many changes, we’re more likely to give up entirely. Add to this the conflicting advice often found online, should you do cardio or yoga? Low-carb or Mediterranean? Meditate or journal? and it’s no wonder many of us feel stuck before we even begin.
The Simplified Approach: Focus on One Thing
Instead of spreading your energy across multiple goals, try focusing on just one area of improvement at a time. This approach, often referred to as habit stacking, is rooted in the idea that small, consistent changes lead to big results over time.
Think of your health goals as building blocks. By focusing on mastering one block at a time, you create a stable foundation that can support long-term progress. For example, if your biggest struggle is fatigue, start by addressing your sleep habits. Once better sleep is in place, you’ll have more energy to tackle nutrition, exercise, or stress management.
Step 1: Assess Your Energy Levels
The first step in simplifying your wellness journey is understanding where your body needs the most support. To help with this, I’ve created a free energy assessment tool that guides you through evaluating key areas of your health. By identifying where you’re struggling most, whether it’s poor sleep, unbalanced meals, or chronic stress, you can prioritise your efforts and see faster results.
Taking an assessment not only pinpoints your starting point but also helps you focus your energy where it matters most. Imagine how empowering it feels to know exactly what to tackle first instead of spinning your wheels trying to fix everything.
Step 2: Start Small and Build Momentum
Once you’ve identified your focus area, the next step is to set a small, achievable goal. Here are some examples based on common struggles:
These small steps might not feel significant, but they’re powerful because they’re achievable. When you succeed with one habit, you build confidence and create momentum to tackle the next.
Step 3: The Power of Habit Stacking
Once your initial habit feels second nature, it’s time to layer in the next one. This is the essence of habit stacking: building on the foundation you’ve already created. Here’s an example:
By stacking habits, you’re never overwhelmed by too much change at once. Instead, you’re creating a sustainable routine that evolves over time.
Why This Approach Works
Getting Started with Your First Step
If you’re feeling inspired to simplify your wellness journey, start by asking yourself: What’s the ONE thing I can focus on that will have the biggest impact on my energy levels?
If you’re not sure, my free energy assessment is here to help. This tool walks you through evaluating your health and highlights the area most in need of attention. Once you’ve identified your starting point, you can begin making manageable changes and set yourself up for long-term success.
The Bottom Line
Lasting change doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t require you to do everything at once. By focusing on one thing at a time, you can create habits that stick and achieve results that last. Whether your first step is improving your sleep, eating better, or managing stress, remember that progress is more important than perfection.
