Effective planning can help manage energy levels, support balanced eating, avoid unnecessary supermarket trips and reduce stress

After two weeks of pure relaxation—sunshine, sea swimming, reading, and long walks—I've found myself easing back into the work mode this week. It’s amazing how much a break can rejuvenate the mind and body, yet, as I’m learning, getting back into the rhythm of daily life can be more challenging than anticipated.

This week has been a perfect reminder of the power of planning. Coming off a break, I've experienced firsthand how easy it is to let the daily routines slip—especially when it comes to something as essential as meal planning. After a long day of catching up on work, I've found myself standing in the supermarket, wondering, "What are we eating tonight?" only to realise I've walked out with more food than I needed and none of the answers I was looking for.

During these moments, I've been reminded of the crucial role planning plays, not just in managing our schedules but in supporting our overall well-being. Here are a few ways that planning can make all the difference:

1. Energy Management

Returning to work after a break can be exhausting, and without a plan, it’s easy to waste precious energy on small, repetitive decisions—like what to eat. By planning meals in advance, you conserve energy for more important tasks, reducing the mental load and keeping exhaustion at bay.

2. Balanced Eating

When you’re caught off guard with no dinner plan, it’s tempting to grab whatever is quick and easy—which isn’t always the healthiest option. By planning your meals, you can ensure you and your family are eating balanced, nutritious meals that support your energy levels throughout the day.

3. Avoiding Last-Minute Supermarket Runs

We’ve all been there: a quick trip to the store for one item turns into an unplanned shopping spree. With a meal plan in place, you can avoid these last-minute runs, saving time, money, and the temptation to overbuy or choose less healthy options.

4. Reducing Stress and Decision Fatigue

Planning meals isn’t just about food; it’s about reducing stress. When life gets busy—juggling kids, work, and everything in between—having a plan in place means one less decision to make each day. It’s a simple step that can have a big impact on your mental well-being.

5. Supporting Work-Life Balance

In the midst of a busy week, it's easy to let the basics, like meal planning, slip through the cracks. However, keeping these routines in place is essential for maintaining balance. A little planning goes a long way in ensuring that you have the energy and focus needed for both work and family life.

As I get back into the groove of things, I’m reminded that planning isn’t just a chore; it’s a tool for self-care.
