What to Do When the Motivation Stops?

How to you stay motivated when you're not seeing the outcome you hope for? It's about consistency and finding what works for you.

This week, I've been reflecting a lot on consistency. Recently, I was fortunate enough to receive a grant for business growth from Mid Devon’s Prosperity Programme. This grant includes six months of business strategy support for my nutritional therapy practice, along with a comprehensive marketing audit. One of the key messages that keeps coming up is consistency—something I've struggled with over the years.

If I’m being completely transparent, I’ve chopped and changed my messaging several times over the last year, usually when I don’t see the outcome I hoped for. It's natural to feel the need to pivot when things aren’t working, but I’ve learned that it can actually have the opposite effect. This isn't just a challenge for me in business; I see it with my clients, too. Many have tried different apps, supplements, and techniques to improve their health, but they often end up feeling overwhelmed and discouraged when things don’t improve as quickly as they’d like.

So, what do you do when the motivation stops, and you’re not seeing the results you hoped for? How do you stay consistent and focused on your goals? Here are five strategies that I’ve found helpful, both in business and in health:

1. Keep Going, Even When It’s Tough

It sounds simple, but one of the hardest things to do is to keep moving forward when progress feels slow. It’s important to remember that consistency often yields results over time. Don’t give up just because you’re not seeing immediate outcomes. Sometimes, the breakthroughs come right after the point where most people give up.

2. Reflect on Your Journey

Take time to reflect on where you started and how far you’ve come. Have you given your current approach enough time to show results? Often, we’re too quick to change course without giving our strategies or health routines enough time to work. Reflection can provide valuable insights and help you decide whether to stick with your current plan or make informed adjustments.

3. Seek Help and Support

You don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s a nutritional therapist, personal trainer, a health coach or even a trusted friend, seeking outside support can provide the guidance and accountability you need to stay on track. Sometimes, a fresh perspective can make all the difference in reigniting your motivation.

4. Simplify and Recalibrate

When things aren’t working, our instinct is often to add more—more strategies, more tools, more tasks. But this can lead to overwhelm. Instead, consider stripping back and recalibrating. What is truly essential? Go back to basics and focus on what’s most important. For me, this means returning to my core mission: empowering ambitious women to reclaim their energy and achieve their dreams without the burden of burnout and overwhelm.

5. Give Yourself Grace

Finally, remember to be kind to yourself. It’s easy to be hard on yourself when things aren’t going as planned, but self-compassion is key to maintaining long-term motivation. Acknowledge your efforts, celebrate small wins, and don’t be afraid to take a break if needed.

In the coming weeks, you’ll notice a shift in my messaging as I strip back, recalibrate, and refocus on my core mission. I’m returning to where I started, with a specialised focus on empowering ambitious women to move forward from exhaustion, fatigue, and fatigue-related chronic illnesses.
